Beyond Local & Organic conversation Oct. 22 in Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON – A free conversation about the future of sustainable agriculture in Washington and beyond will be held Friday, Oct. 22 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Sakuma Auditorium of the WSU Mount Vernon Research Center.

The event features three panelists:

Jack Kloppenburg is a professor in the Department of Community and Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin Madison and is well-known for his work in examining the social impacts of agricultural systems, especially as related to agricultural research, plant breeding, local food systems and farm to school initiatives.

Diane Dempster has been involved in organic agriculture in Washington for over 20 years. Diane currently serves as the president of Washington Tilth, is the organic buyer for Charlie’s Produce in Seattle and manages Farmers Own, a division of Charlie’s which contracts with growers to act as their sales agent.

Branden Born is an assistant professor in the Department of Urban Design and Planning at the University of Washington specializing in food systems planning.
