Master Gardener Pumpkin Day Oct. 9 at Hovander Park

Sep 23rd, 2010 | Category: Events, News

WHATCOM – The Whatcom County Master Gardeners’ annual “Pumpkin Day” will be held 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 9, at Hovander Homestead Park in Ferndale. Anyone who needs a pumpkin is welcome to show up at the park; hundreds of pumpkins will be available.

Throughout the spring and summer, Master Gardener volunteers and children in the Master Gardener “Veggie Patrol” grow several varieties of pumpkins in and near the new Children’s Garden at the park. About two dozen kids, ages 4 to 10, and their parents, helped plant seeds, observed their growth in the Hovander greenhouse, transplanted them outdoors and helped weed and tend the plants. The Veggie Patrol class meets every Saturday from May 1 to October. Master Gardener volunteers who tend the Hovander House gardens also participate.

Last year, Master Gardeners produced about 350, according to Harriet Arkley, Master Gardner and Veggie Patrol leader.

Master Gardeners are a volunteer corps trained through the Cooperative Extension Service to provide science-based gardening advice to the public. One of the group’s projects is the demonstration gardens at Hovander. For more information on the program, call the extension service at 676-6736 or go online to http://whatcom.wsu.edu/mastergardener/index.htm.
