WHATCOM COUNTY – Whatcom Farm Friends’ Farmers Growing Trees for Salmon (FGTFS) is holding free tree giveaways on Saturdays, Oct. 23 and Nov. 6. The event is done in conjunction with three of the program’s farmer growers: Smit Dairy, Boxx Berry Farm, and BelleWood Acres. The trees are available to any Whatcom County community member who commits to planting the trees along creeks, rivers, ponds, wetlands, or ditches for the purpose of water quality. Two-year-old Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, and Sitka Spruce seedlings will be available. This year’s trees are planted in farmers’ fields. Community members should come with a shovel and be prepared to dig most of their own trees. Some volunteers will be on hand to assist with digging and bagging trees. Bags will be provided for transport. Quantities of 50 or more trees must be pre-ordered by visiting the Farm Friends website at www.wcfarmfriends.com or by calling the office at (360) 354-1337.
