Food Safety Bill passes, with small farms amendment

Nov 30th, 2010 | Category: News

The U.S. Senate passed the food safety bill, including the Manager’s Amendment (formerly referred to as the Tester amendment), by a vote of 73-25. The House of Reps must now pass the legislation before signed into law by the President.
Under the amendment, small farmers/producers would not be subject to new federal requirements if they:
• Sell the majority of their food directly to consumers within the state, or within a 275-mile radius of where it was produced, and
• Have less than $500,000 per year in sales.
Producers will continue to be overseen by local and state food safety and health agencies.
