Group files initiative to ban cages confining hens

Jan 20th, 2011 | Category: News

A coalition led by the Humane Society has filed a state initiative seeking to stop the use of battery cages to confine egg-producing hens.

The coalition is called Washingtonians for Humane Farms and says 6 million Washington hens are confined in such cages at industry farms across the state. The initiative would not stop cages, rather ensures that hens “have enough room to stretch their wings.”

The coalition needs 242,000 signatures by July 8 to make the Nov. 2011 ballot .To sign the initiative, link to the group’s website: http://www.humanewa.com/. The group also has a Facebook page at Washingtonians for Humane Farms.

Where does the scientific community stand on this initiative? Has Washington State Vet Med School weighed in? I would assume WSU’s vet program has some thoughts on the issue, based on its extensive work on livestock handling and care.
