Seminar discusses producer-owned business structures

BELLINGHAM – A seminar called “Producer Owned Business Structures: Pooling Resources for Market and Business Expansion” will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 26 for those interested in learning more about business structures, including cooperative corporations, limited liability companies, and benefit (B) corporations. The event, held from 3-6 p.m. in the RE-Sources Sustainable Living Conference Room in Bellingham, will feature two agricultural producers and a food manufacturer who have formed and operated these types of business structures.

The event includes a panel discussion about tax-accounting, legal requirements and federal agricultural development programs. The panel includes:  Phil Tucker, owner of Whatcom Natural Beef and six year board member of Island Grown Farmers Co-op, who will review a Cooperative; Allan Merritt, owner of Merritt Apples, Inc. and founding owner of Skagit Fresh Natural Beverage LLC will discuss a Limited Liability Company; and Trudy Scherting, Owner of Moka Joe Coffee will review a Benefit (B) Corporation.
