North Cascades Meat Producers Coop meets June 7

Jun 1st, 2012 | Category: News

BELLINGHAM – The North Cascades Meat Producers Cooperative will hold a meeting on June 7, at the St. Luke’s Educational Center in Bellingham, Washington from 7PM to 8:30PM. The cooperative intends to provide custom and USDA meat processing services, as well as a cooperative-owned wholesale distribution program for interested meat producers from Island, Skagit, and Whatcom Counties.

Members of the board of directors will present the cooperative’s business plan and information about membership. A key component of this plan will be the use of a USDA-inspected mobile slaughter unit which will be leased from the Pierce County Conservation District. This self-contained unit will be stationed at a farm site in Whatcom County and possibly a site in Skagit County, initially projected at six days per month.  The unit can accommodate the harvest of up to 12 beef, 20 pork, or 30 lambs per day.

An element of this plan is the development of the North Cascade Meats, A Farmers Cooperative brand. The cooperative’s board of directors has developed common production standards that ensure animals are pasture or grass finished (no grains), no feed antibiotics or hormones are used, no petroleum-based fertilizers are used on pastures, and no detrimental impacts to riparian areas are permitted.

The cooperative’s board of directors is working with the Northwest Agriculture Business Center to develop this plan.
The meeting will be held at St. Luke’s Educational Center, 3333 Squalicum Parkway, Bellingham WA. Meeting Room A .For more information, visit
