Free micro-dairy development workshops offered in San Juan County

Nov 2nd, 2012 | Category: News

SAN JUAN COUNTY – The WSU Extension in San Juan County has obtained grant funding for a series of six free micro-dairy development workshops to be held November 2012 through March 2013.  The program curriculum will cover business planning, marketing, accounting, food safety, dairy science, dairy processing, livestock production and health, and dairy farm best management practices. In addition to classroom work, participants will visit local dairy farms, talk with farmers and veterinarians, and create their own dairy facility design.Workshop participants will receive free resource materials, including several books, various guidelines for dairy processors by the Dairy Practices Council, and booklets and information packages from the Washington State Department of Agriculture. Workshop participants will also receive copies of PowerPoint presentations and other handouts from workshop speakers, as well as business plan and marketing plan templates, drafted to reflect dairy industry trends and farming conditions and costs in San Juan County.  The templates are for participants to customize for their own use.  These plans are specific to San Juan County, but participants from outside the county are welcome to attend the workshops and customize their own plans. There is no charge for the first 18 participants registered for all six workshops; a fee of $10 at the door will be charged for each person attending each workshop session. Fruit, juice and snacks provided. Participants must provide their own lunch. To meet grant requirements, the workshops must have a minimum of 15 farms or individuals committed to attending all six workshops.  A farm may be represented by more than one person at any workshop.  For more information, contact Candace Jagel, Agriculture Program Coordinator, at candace_jagel@wsu.edu, or call (360) 378-4414.
