Eat Local Month: Mount Vernon, Whatcom events put focus on food

Sep 5th, 2013 | Category: Community, Food

Mount Vernon presents a month-long Celebration of Skagit Valley Farm Fresh Products and Mount Vernon Dining from Sept. 1-30. Twenty-five of Mount Vernon’s restaurants have joined together to celebrate the produce and products of the Skagit Valley. Throughout the month, restaurants will have special menu items, including beverages, which feature Skagit Valley products and showcase local farms.

Eat Local, Mount Vernon is a cornerstone event of the 2013 Mount Vernon Mayor’s Wellness Challenge, which is a month-long series of free activities to inspire the community to healthier lifestyles. Participants can also vote in the People’s Choice Award Contest and be entered to win a gift certificate from participating restaurants.

In Whatcom County, Sustainable Connections Food & Farming Program presents a month-long celebration highlighting local foods, farms, and fishers. With the help of local businesses, farms and restaurants, Whatcom County will have the opportunity to celebrate “Eat Local Month” with cooking classes, special dinners, food-focused movies, foraging trips, farm tours and more. The month includes the 6th annual Whatcom County Farm Tour featuring more than 10 stops, and the Whatcom Harvest Dinner benefiting community education and farming organizations.

Restaurants will offer local dishes in celebration of Eat Local Month, and an Eat Local Month Passport allows participants to earn passport stamps by eating the Eat Local Month dishes (comprised of 50 percent or more locally sourced ingredients), buying $10 of local produce at participating grocery stores and markets, and attending Eat Local Month events like the Farm Tour and Harvest Dinner.

For a list of events, passport prizes and Farm Tour details, pick up a Farm Tour & Eat Local Month Guide, which includes a Farm Tour map with stop descriptions, participating Eat Local Month restaurants and a calendar of Eat Local Month events. The Guide can be found at the Community Food Co-op, Village Books, Public Libraries, farmers markets, Whatcom Farmers Co-op stores, participating restaurants, and online at
