Field Walk highlights leafy greens

Nov 1st, 2013 | Category: News

MOUNT VERNON – A field walk highlighting leafy green variety trials occurring at both Cloud Mountain Farm Center and at WSU Mt. Vernon Research and Extension Center will take place on Monday, Nov. 4. Initial screening of types/varieties began in the fall of 2012 and spring and fall plantings in 2013. Participants will tour the variety trial planting at WSU Mount Vernon, and discuss density planting, weed management, and equipment for mechanical seeding and harvesting. A number of leafy green crop types can be field-grown and grown using season extension techniques and harvested during non-peak production periods in the Pacific Northwest. Evaluation of the most productive types/varieties for this region can reduce production costs and increase profitability.  Additionally, recent and proposed changes to food safety rules will likely alter current production practices. The walk is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the WSU NWREC, 16650 State Route 536, Mount Vernon. For more information, visit http://mtvernon.wsu.edu/index.html.
