Glendale Shepherd wins 2014 Good Food Award

CLINTON – Whidbey Island’s Glendale Shepherd, of Clinton, was named a Good Food Award winner for its aged sheep milk tomme named “Island Brebis.” The awards ceremony took place Jan. 16 in San Francisco, CA. This year’s winners were selected from 1,450 entries from all 50 states in a Blind Tasting held in September. Selected entries then went through a rigorous vetting process to verify they met the sustainability and social responsibility criteria to win a Good Food Award. In total, 130 winning food and drink producers from 32 states.

The dairy, operated by the Swanson family for three generations, produces sheep milk cheeses. Owner Lynn Swanson said this was the first time their farm entered the awards, and what she likes about these awards is that the food is judged not only on the basis of good taste, but also on humane animal husbandry, responsible practices and other factors. “I feel that this award acknowledges and highlights our farm’s high animal welfare practices, (we are Animal Welfare Approved), sourcing our feed and other ingredients from non-GMO and organic crops, the use of solar panels on our farm, and responsible environmental practices, as well as producing a really great cheese,” Swanson said. “The producers that win this award are really knocking themselves out to go the extra mile and hold themselves to very high standards, and it really shows in the quality of the food and drinks they produce.”

Washington State had a total of six winners, including: Kuma Coffee’s Kenya Kiamabara AA and Roast House’s Batzchocula Guatemelan, Firefly Kitchens’ Firefly Kimchi (this is the fourth year in a row for the company), Oly Kraut’s Sea Vegetable & Curry Kraut, and Lilli-Pilli Patisserie’s Mirabelle Plum preserves.
