Open House: Extension offices celebrate 100 years

May 4th, 2014 | Category: News

Local WSU Extension offices will hold an open house and special events in May and June to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914, which established the Cooperation Extension Service. Set up as a means of sharing the research and discoveries of land-grant universities, the WSU Extension has been available to residents of Washington for decades, offering a number of educational programs such as 4-H, Livestock Advisors, Master Gardeners, Beach Watchers, Noxious Weeds Program, and more. Agriculture, gardening, community, economic wellness, health and wellness, and youth and families are focused topic areas.

On Thursday, May 8, the WSU Skagit County Extension will celebrate the Extension’s past contributions and look forward to the next 100 years of service during an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. at their Burlington office, 11768 Westar Lane, Suite A. Visitors can learn about current programs and educational opportunities, and take part in an ice cream social.

The Snohomish County Extension will also hold an open house on May 8 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the WSU Snohomish County Extension Offices located at McCollum Park in South Everett (600 128th St SE). The open house will include program spotlights such as garden tours, forest walks, 4-H Robotics, and interactive activities from a variety of additional programs.

The Whatcom Extension will celebrate the anniversary on Saturday, June 14, by hosting a booth and birthday cake at the Bellingham Farmer’s Market. A second booth and cake will be held at the Northwest Washington Fair in Lynden in August.
