County fairs highlight local agriculture

August is here and that means county fairs. Fun times and tasty food, and always a good place to learn about local agriculture and explore what’s growing around you. Each fair features an agriculture area as well as contests, so let’s check them out.

Stanwood-Camano Community Fair: Through Sunday, Aug. 2. The “Best Lil Fair in the West” is one of the largest community fairs in Washington State which showcases the Stanwood-Camano Community’s past, present and future. Whidbey Island Fair: Held for 90 years, the Whidbey Island Fair takes place Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 6-9. There will be games, rides, and music as well as local food selections, exhibits, and information booths. Lots of family fun at Fiddle Faddle Farm, including straw maze, stick horse races, and more. Skagit County Fair: Held Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 12-15, the Skagit County Fair includes food, live music, rides and a car show, as well as farm animals, tractor show and more. Meet local and community organizations at booths and learn about local agriculture in the ag area. Exhibits  include crafts, canning, baking, and others. San Juan County Fair: The San Juan County Fair takes place Aug. 12-15, and includes an Ag Corner where visitors can peruse local farm products and information. The Fair invites farmers and producers to display (relatively) non-perishable farm products, farm signs, posters about your farm, or photos of your farm operation to the Ag Corner on Tuesday, Aug. 11. (This year’s Ag Corner is between the Beer Garden and Parks and Rec’s new Office.) Northwest Washington Fair: Held Monday through Saturday, Aug. 17-22, the Northwest Washington Fair has a live music line-up, contests, rides, food and more. Find information about local agriculture and see farm animals in the Henry Jansen Ag building area. Visit the WFC Ag Adventure Center with tractors and the award-winning “Farming for Life” exhibit. The Small Animal Experience has young, small and miniature animals for viewing, and the Dairy Maternity Ward in the Dairy Barn may offer the chance to see a newborn calf. Evergreen State Fair: Held Aug. 27 – Sept. 7, the fair features music, carnival, animal exhibits, contests, lumberjack shows, rodeo, and more. For a complete schedule see www.evergreenfair.org.
